Many private specialists take direct referrals if you phone them. While it might seem quick and efficient, it can lead to problems such as duplicated investigations, delay, and extra cost. Its well known that in America a lot of expense is generated when specialists with a narrow field of expertise see someone, can't solve a problem and refer patients on to other specialists, who may not understand the problem either.
One role of the GP is to refer people to the right specialist for a given problem and interpret any findings or advice if needed.
